We can trace the history of Grand Slams to 1877 and the first edition of Wimbledon, although Grand Slams or majors would only be defined decades later. The first concept of what we today refer to as Grand Slam tournaments was the “Official Championships,” created in the 1920s and included the national championships of Australia, France, Britain, and the United States.
By the 1930s, these were commonly recognised as the four most prestigious tennis tournaments globally. 1968 was the end of the Amateur Era and the beginning of the Open Era, which allowed professionals to start competing at Grand Slam tournaments.

As for total Grand Slam titles, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic hold the record for most men’s singles titles with 22 each, while Margaret Court has won 24 majors in women’s singles. Mike Bryan has the most men’s doubles titles with 18, while Martina Navratilova holds the unprecedented record for most women’s doubles titles with 31.
A Calendar-year Grand Slam or Calendar Slam is a tennis achievement for a player that wins all four major tournaments within the same year. This has only been achieved by five players throughout history:
